Buying a Piano

As a practicing piano tuner/technician for over 18 years, I have seen many people who were very pleased with their purchase. Unfortunately, I have all too often had the sad experience of dealing with the aftermath of less than satisfactory purchases. It is my hope that I can help you stay firmly in the happy group.

One of the primary considerations in purchasing a piano is price. Pianos can be very expensive, especially if you buy a new one. A used piano in good condition can be a wonderful alternative. There are some fairly dependable assumptions that can be made here. In general, you will get what you pay for, similar to buying a used car. The higher priced models will be of more recent manufacture and/or of a higher quality. The less expensive piano will be older and/or of lesser quality. Almost without exception, you will not get your money’s worth in a free piano and rarely in the $100 or $200 piano.

Let’s talk price here. No, I am not going to give you price guidelines. However be aware that there may be a great distance between the right price for piano and getting good value for your money. For example, you may pay the right price for an inexpensive imported knock-off piano, but is it a good value when a few years later it becomes un-tuneable, loses its tone or worse yet, starts to fall apart? I am sure you have heard the horror stories. In many cases, it is a much better value to purchase an older high quality piano than a younger or new piano of lesser quality. Again, condition is the key.
